Geek Sheet
Materials
Here at The British Outdoor Kitchen Co we enjoy being real geeks about materials.
All of our kitchens are made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is the superior choice for outdoor kitchens due to its corrosion resistance, durability, low maintenance, and premium appearance. Carbon steel is often used by other brands instead of stainless steel and you can read below to see the issues.
Low-grade outdoor kitchens, using carbon steel, typically fail within 2–3 years in average outdoor conditions.
Not only are our kitchens built in stainless steel they are then powder coated with a textured heat resistant Interpon coating. This gives added protection and a lovely look and feel. Which is why we can back our Outdoor Kitchens with a 25 Year Guarantee.
Stainless Steel Vs Carbon Steel for Outdoor Kitchens
Corrosion Resistance:
- Carbon steel: Poor resistance, rusts quickly outdoors unless heavily coated.
- Stainless steel: Excellent resistance.

- Carbon steel: Very strong and impact resistant but vulnerable to corrosion.
- Stainless steel: Strong and durable while maintaining corrosion resistance.
Weather Performance: - Carbon steel: Requires coatings; chips can lead to rust.
- Stainless steel: Performs well in all climates
Maintenance: - Carbon steel: Needs coating maintenance and rust treatment.
- Stainless steel: Easy to clean, minimal upkeep.
Cost: - Carbon steel: Cheaper upfront but higher long term maintenance.
- Stainless steel: Higher initial cost but lower lifetime cost.
Composite Wood Vs Wood
We use composite wood in our kitchens to maintain and protect the original look and feel of your kitchen. Keeping looking all shiny and new for years to come.
While some people like the aging and greying effect of traditional wood we resisted using this as it requires the customer to have to complete annual maintenance and can make the wood warp and gather unsightly mildew and mould.
We chose to use high grade composite wood for its pleasing aesthetics, durability and low maintenance so you can enjoy your outdoor kitchen all year round.
